This page contains information about the Physics Intercollegiate Programme, run between QMUL, RHUL and KCL.
Intercollegiate teaching gives you, the student, a wide range of courses to choose from which can provide you with a very varied or specialised set of modules to suit your degree programme.
Please see the tabs below for more information or the central Intercollegiate Programme Hub Page -
The term dates for the MSci/MSc are slightly different to the BSc term dates as there is no reading week (except at UCL/KCL Maths) and classes run for 11 weeks straight. In 2023/24, the term dates are as follows:
Semester 1 - Autumn 2023
Monday 25 September - Friday 15 December 2023
Apart from:
*(QMUL courses will start Monday 2 October - Friday 15 December 2023)
*KCL Maths Reading Week: w/c Monday 30 October 2023
Semester 2 - Spring 2024
Monday 12 January - Friday 31 March 2024
*QMUL courses which will start on Monday 22 January 2024 – Friday 5 April 2024

You will need to submit registration forms for your chosen modules for each intercollegiate college that you will be attending, including your home institution. This is in addition to registering for your modules online via MySIS.
Any changes to Autumn Term courses can be made up until Friday 6 October 2023 and changes to Spring Term courses can be made up until Friday 19 January 2024.
Useful Information:
QMUL Instructions on how to complete the forms
Module codes for all universities
Forms:
QMUL Registration Form - QMUL Students
QMUL Registration Form - Non-QMUL Students
Note:
All MSci registration forms must be authorised by Prof Adrian Bevan (GOJ 413) the academic contact for the MSci programme. You are only eligible to take up one intercollegiate module.
All MSc registration forms must be authorised by Dr David Vegh the academic contact for the MSc programme. You are only eligible to take up a maximum of two intercollegiate modules.
KCL Maths modules are no longer available to QMUL students. UCL have withdrawn from the Intercollegiate Programme and no longer an option.
Access to materials:
Completed registration forms will be passed onto the relevant intercollegiate college(s) for processing. Please note if you do not submit your registration forms, you will not be entered for the examinations.
Once you have been registered onto a course at another institution, they will email you to inform you of how to access their online materials and where to obtain your ID card etc. Please be patient, this may take a few weeks so it is advisable that you submit your forms as early as possible.
If you drop a module at another College you should inform both your own College and the administrative contact point at the College that runs the course.

Pre-requisites/Co-requisites
- Students that wish to take any of the QM-based Theoretical Physics modules in the 4th year (SPA7018U, SPA7027U, SPA7001U & SPA7031U) must have taken Mathematical Techniques 3, Physical Dynamics, Quantum Mechanics B and Quantum Mechanics and Symmetry (QMUL - MSci students) or equivalent.
- Relativistic Waves and Quantum Fields is a co-requisite for all of the QM-based Theoretical Physics modules (QMUL - MSci and MSc)
- Spacetime and Gravity and Mathematical Techniques 4 (or equivalent) are also pre-requisites of Differential Geometry in Theoretical Physics (QMUL -MSci)
- Physical Cosmology or equivalent is a pre-requisite for Advanced Cosmology (QMUL - MSci students)
In the interest of balance and/or for syllabus reasons:
- Students should not take Math. Methods for Theoretical Physics if they have taken Mathematical Techniques 4 (QMUL - MSci students)
- QMUL students are not eligible to take any KCL Maths modules.
For recommended courses based on your pathway, please see the MSci Handbook
- Students that wish to take any of the QM-based Theoretical Physics modules in the 4th year (SPA7018U, SPA7027U, SPA7001U & SPA7031U) must have taken Mathematical Techniques 3, Physical Dynamics, Quantum Mechanics B and Quantum Mechanics and Symmetry (QMUL - MSci students) or equivalent.

Please note that you will be expected to attend a minimum of 70% of lectures for each module. It is your responsibility to ensure that you sign in at each lecture. If your attendance for any given module falls below 70%, you risk being de-registered and will therefore not be able to sit the exam.
If you are going to miss a lecture at RHUL or KCL, you should contact the lecturer to let them know you are going to be absent and copy in the relevant administrative contact.

What intercollegiate courses are available to me?
There are a wide range of courses in the intercollegiate programme and which modules you take will depend on your degree programme, timetable restrictions and your previous study. Please confirm with your academic representative whether your selection are appropriate.
How can I find out when the courses I am interested in will be taught?
The timetable is accessible above. There are also individual links per college so you can check the live system. Please be advised that each institution's timetable is independent of the others, therefore, it is possible they may change. It is in your best interest to check the timetable regularly.
I need to submit an extenuating circumstances claim form, who do I submit it to?
You should submit an extenuating circumstances claim to your HOME institution, and follow the same process as your home modules. If extensions/first sits are to be granted, then the relevant people will be informed.
Will I have to pay a fee to take a course at another college?
No, you will not have to pay any extra fees.
How can I gain access to the online materials for my intercollegiate modules?
Once you are registered at another institution, you will be given access to their online materials. Therefore, you should register as early as possible to ensure that you don't miss homework's/lecture notes that have been posted online. If you are registered but still do not have access, please speak to the Admin Contact at the relevant institution (contact details are above).
Where can I collect my ID card/s from and do I really need one?
Having an ID card for the institution/s you will be attending is important as it will allow you access to their teaching buildings and facilities. You may also need the relevant ID card when sitting the exam, so you should pick one up at the start of term. Once you are registered with another University, they will inform you of how to pick up your card.
Will I get a new email address?
Each college you are registered with will give you a student email account. Please get into the habit of checking your new email accounts as you may miss important information if you don't.
When will I get my exam timetable?
Your exam timetable will be released to you approximately one month before exams begin. The intercollegiate colleges do not release the exam schedules at the same time. Therefore, you may find that the timetable released to you from your home institution is incomplete. Be advised each colleges will contact you via email to let you know when your exams are, so be observant.
QMUL Students only - I am applying for another course, where can I get my transcript?
You can access your most recent HEAR transcript via your Gradintelligence account. More details can be found here.
