General question about exam answers

Dear Dr. Bianconi,

I wanted to ask about how much we should explain our solving steps in the exam.
For example, in the exam question before from a past paper; should we say "Using the characteristic equation by the method proved in lectures" directly, or should we say "replacing y = c_1e^(lamda x) .... we get the characteristic equation"? Or for example with Euler's type equation method, should we explain it or should we just apply it?
Best wishes,
Felipe

Dear Felipe,
you will not be asked derivations of results shown in lecture in the exam (even more so now that the exam is online).
You should give enough explanation of what you are doing, so writing "Using the characteristic equation by the method proved in lectures" will be appropriate. For the Euler method you should clearly state that you identify the ODE as an Euler type ODE.Then you can just define what is z and you can proceed directly using the ODE for z derived in the lectures. I hope it helps.
